The Russian-American Cultural Center is proud to present a major exhibition of Russian and American artists including Tamar Hirschl, Roger Book, John Bowman, Daniel Georges, Jim Gingerich, Mikhail Gubin, Athos Zacharias, Larry Rivers, Ross Bleckner, Grisha Bruskin, Vitaly Komar & Alexander Melamid, Alexander Kosolapov, Janet Fish, Eteri Chkadua, Strong-Cuevas, Madeleine Hatz, Elena Korennova, Leonid Lerman, Meryl Meisler, Irina Nakhova, Helene Burke, Daria Deshuk, Simon Okshtein, Alexander Petrov, George Tsypin, Yona Verwer, Ted Victoria, and Robert Vaughn.
New large-scale paintings, sculptures and installations are on display in the extraordinary space - an "industrial cathedral" in the midst of New York's newest art district, with an impressive view of the New York City skyline. These 20,000 square feet of architecturally designed industrial space, with 20-foot ceilings, and rows of columns, serve as the background for these magnificent artworks.
"Dumbo Double Deuce" does not focus exclusively on juxtaposition or parallels between two cultures. It presents a vertical slice of the contemporary New York art scene.
In showing new works by both the established and emerging American and Russian New York based artists, curator Regina Khidekel continues her exploration of cross-influences between the most essential art trends in America and Russia. Prior shows curated by Regina Khidekel include "5 +5", New York, 1995, and "It's the Real Thing; Soviet Sots Art and American Pop Art" at the Weisman Art Museum in 1998. "Dumbo Double Deuce" continues intercultural communication in the 21st century, and in doing so advances it in a bold new context.
The SPRING ART GALA on May 23rd, 2001, will take place in the exhibition space. It will provide the opportunity for invited guests to meet and mingle with the artists in an atmosphere in which each will become a part of art performance.
